During the heating, the Prastotr sings a chant entitled Gharmarocana; the basic text speaks of the rising light that sets everything aglow.

The moment the pot is fully heated, the priests and the sacrificer rise up and recite collectively the so-called Avakasa mantras or Gazing mantras (Taittiriya Aranyaka 4.7). These mantras belong to the solemn watching of the heated pot enveloped in flames. The first verse of these mantras is from hymn 1.164 of the Rgveda, a hymn full of enigmatic expressions. Part of the Avakasa recitation follows in translation:

"I saw the herdsman, never taking rest, wandering hither and thither on his pathways. Enveloping himself in those (waters or fluids) that converge, in those that spread out, he moves around and around in the creatures (or in the worlds)."

"Agni (the earthly fire of the pot) has come together with Agni (the sun), with the god Savitr; he shines together with the sun.

"Svaha! Agni has come together with Ascesis, with the god Savitr; he has started to shine with the Sun."

"You shine wide, bearer of the cloud-sphere of heaven, bearer of the earth, bearer of the wide firmament, the bearing god of gods, the immortal one, born from Ascesis."

"Lord of all continents, lord of the whole world, lord of the whole mind, lord of all speech, lord of all ascesis, lord of all Bráhman-formulations."

"You are renowned among the gods, o god Gharma, protect the gods."

"Confer on us speech, born from ascesis and devoted to the gods."

"Germ of the gods. Father of Hymns. Protector of offspring. The thought of the inspired poets."

"With the god Savitr the god has striven, with the sun he started to shine."

"You are the giver of a full life-time to us, o Gharma, you are the giver of lustre. You are our father, as a father awaken us."

"(You are) the placer of a full life-time, the creator of a body, the placer of milk; the giver of lustre, the giver of space, the giver of wealth."

"O you who travel through the atmosphere, more wide than the wide; may we reach you; do not injure me.".
